Session Descriptions
How Scholars Works (1 hr)
Aimed at new Scholars@Duke Power Users and delegates or those who need a refresher, this session, offered quarterly, will cover the basics of Scholars@Duke, including a breakdown of user roles and capabilities, information on how to navigate the Scholars@Duke and Elements user interfaces and help resources, a tutorial on how to add and manage user profiles, and tips on how to best assist faculty, staff and students with their Scholars@Duke profiles.
Target Audience: New Power Users, New delegates (All Scholars@Duke users welcome)
Instructors: Amy Kostrewa (Office of Faculty Affairs Administration), Haley Walton (Librarian for Education and Open Scholarship)
Scholars Faculty Photo Day: Photos and Information
The Office of Faculty Affairs Administration will directly invite faculty to register for a 5-minute time-slot to sit for a headshot with a professional photographer. Preference will go to new faculty and faculty without Scholars@Duke photos, then open to all faculty. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about Scholars@Duke and walk faculty through the basic steps to manage their profiles and assign delegates.
Target Audience: New faculty, Faculty without photos
Organized by Amy Kostrewa and Hans Harlacher (Office of Faculty Affairs Administration)
Scholars Data: Scholars open Tableau dashboards (1 hr)
Individual Scholars@Duke profiles provide a wealth of information about Duke faculty and their research, but reviewing Scholars data in aggregate can be very powerful. Participants will be guided through the Scholars@Duke open Tableau dashboards with a focus on potential use cases and an opportunity to ask questions about the data provided.
Target Audience: Data consumers, School administrators, Faculty (All ScholarsDuke users welcome)
Instructors: Amy Kostrewa and Noah Huffman (Office of Faculty Affairs Administration)
Scholars Data Sources: Getting to the root of it (30 min)
One primary purpose of Scholars@Duke is to synthesize existing information from Duke’s many internal databases. When misinformation in these source databases is revealed through Scholars@Duke, it’s important to understand how to get to the source and get the information corrected. This brief session will provide detailed guidance about where this information is stored and who in your School is the most appropriate representative to engage with you as you set out to assist your faculty, staff, and graduate students in ensure their data is complete, accurate, and appropriately displayed on their Scholars@Duke profiles.
Target Audience: Power Users, Delegates (All Scholars@Duke users welcome)
Instructor: Amy Kostrewa (Office of Faculty Affairs Administration)
Elements Advanced Publications Management (30 min)
Minimal knowledge of the Elements publication database can allow Scholars@Duke users to keep their publication lists up to date; however, there are ways to make managing publications more efficient and more effective. Aspects of Elements such as privacy settings, auto-claim refinement, and open access deposit can help scholars better refine their publication lists and increase visibility. Learn how to manage these settings as a delegate or Power User for faculty, and encourage faculty who work directly with Elements to join this brief session, as well!
Target Audience: Power Users, Delegates, Faculty (All Scholars@Duke users welcome)
Instructor: Haley Walton (Librarian for Education and Open Scholarship)
Scholars Development Updates (1 hr)
This semi-annual session will keep users who engage regularly with Scholars@Duke abreast of recent changes in Scholars as well as provide a roadmap for upcoming changes, with an opportunity to discuss with the Scholars@Duke team what areas your organizations would like to see on the next roadmap for development.
Target Audience: Power Users, Data consumers, School administrators
Instructors: Amy Kostrewa and Noah Huffman (Office of Faculty Affairs Administration)
